PlayBack Statistics

After playback is over the Wave Statistics field displays the following information:

  • Max Volume is the absolute maximum sample value given in decibel form. The signal values range from –70db (soft) to 0db (loud).
  • Average Volume represents the average volume of the entire recording.
  • Max Signal is the absolute maximum sample value of the recording. The value 0% signifies the absence of signal (silence) and the value 100% signifies maximum possible signal.
  • Clipping The warning of possible clipping appears in this field if the amplitude of the sampled signal gets too high, such that a 16-bit (8-bit) number is not large enough to represent it. In this case the signal is clipped (cut off) at the maximum value. Clipping can cause clicks, pops, and distortion of the original sound.
