Smart Server
OLWorkgroupFolders supports two modes of sending messages:
Direct
It connects to the recipients mail box in order pass the mail on directly to the target server. In this mode, there is no need for authentification and for an SMPT server on your provider. For example, if the recipient is running an MS Exchange Server, OLWorkgroupFolders will connect directly to this Exchange Server, for storing the mail into the recipients mail box. It will appear immediatly in your recipients Outlook if the recipient is online.
The recipient mail server always accepts mails for its internal users without the need for autentification. This is the all mails on the internet is transmitted.
Using another SMTP Server
Normally, your provider is running an SMTP server for you, you can connect to the providers SMTP server, which then will connect to either another SMTP server or the recipients mailbox. Using a provider has some advanages, for example the recipients computer may be offline, so there are some connections attemts until a mail gets transmitted, your provider is always connected to the internet, so it is easy for him to try transmitting an email for several days.
If you use a smart server, you usually need an authentification. OLWorkgroupFolders supports authentification using SMTP AUTH with LOGIN, PLAIN and CRAM MD5.
